Cooperative Charting Information

The Cape Fear Sail and Squadron has adopted parts of NOAA charts 11534 and 11541 from mile markers 260 to 320 of the ICW.
We are also responsible for Chart # 11537 that covers the Cape Fear River up to Wilmington.  We use our knowledge of piloting, navigation and positioning to collect and report factual data to NOAA. Cooperative Charting expenses may be deductible on your income tax.

Specifically, we look for discrepancies or changes in our assigned charts and physically verify features shown. We will be reporting our findings by on-line computer.  We also look for hazards to navigation that could endanger a mariner. If we should find a dangerous hazard, where immediate corrective action may be appropriate, we report by radio or telephone directly to the Coast Guard or responsible agency.

In some years, the Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron divides our adopted charts into 5-mile segments and assigns these to volunteer Captains and Crews. At least 3-people are required for each boat to take the required data.  Please contact the COOP Charting Chairman to volunteer for this year's effort. This is a voluntary activity where we do a valuable service and have a good time doing it. Recognition awards are made to both individuals and squadrons for work well done.
